Understory Columbus LGBTQ+ Wedding: Kate + Joslyn

A perfect mid-October Friday, two brides, fall color, and donuts?! What more could you want from a wedding day? Kate + Joslyn couldn’t have planned a more perfect celebration. For years, Kate and I worked together at weddings, but this past fall she got to be the bride!

We began our day getting ready at the Marriott Columbus OSU. They were together through hair and makeup, but separated to get dressed. I staged their first look in the outdoor courtyard, where we had some lovely light peaking in.

From there we hopped on the Bexley Beat with the wedding party and headed downtown! We started at Goodale Park, which was looking lovely on a sunny fall day! We found some lovely orange trees before heading to High Street. Heading into the day, the brides had one specific request: a shot under the Short North arches. I’d say we nailed it! One of my all-time favorite Short North arches shot for sure. Really helped that it was a Friday, I don’t like putting my couple in the middle of High Street on a high traffic day!

It was also SUPER windy that day, maybe one of the windiest wedding days I’ve ever had! Dresses and hair were going everywhere. It was intense!

We wrapped up portraits, hopped back on the bus and headed to their venue, Understory. My first time at this newer venue, I was so happy to be there! I had been excited about this venue ever since it opened. Guests were greeted with champagne and a rainbow flag as they took their seats at the ceremony. As the brides shared their first kiss as wives and came down the aisle, guests waved their rainbow flags in the air to celebrate the newlyweds.

Immediately following the ceremony guests stayed put, champagne in hand, as they proceeded with toasts! I absolutely loved this idea. No distractions, no rushing, everyone was able to be fully present as their closest people shared some words with everyone. It was so lovely!

Then there was cocktail hour, dinner, cake cutting, formal dances and then it was time to party the night away! We ended the night with some night shots out on the patio, and some late night donuts! If you know me, I love donuts and I can’t think of any other way to end an epic wedding day. Congratulations to the brides!

I aim to capture moments and expressions that tell the story of a day, and are authentic to the people involved. If you can look at a collection of images I’ve taken of a total stranger and get a feeling for who they are and what they felt, then I’ve done my job!
