A Week in the Caribbean: San Juan PR, Curacao, Aruba, St. Kitts and St. Thomas/St. John

My winter season tends to be a slower time of year for me, so I try to make it a point to get away – preferably somewhere warm! This year it was a family vacation to the Caribbean. We spent a couple days in San Juan before hopping on a cruise and visiting Curacao, Aruba, St. Kitts and St. Thomas/St. John. We did try to strike the perfect balance of relaxing and exploring.  Sure, we had some beach and pool time, but we also rode a tuk-tuk in Curacao, hiked a mountain and toured a farm in St Kitt’s, snorkeled in Aruba, learned about the impact of the hurricanes in Puerto Rico, St. Thomas and St. John, and toured all kinds of neighborhoods. One of my favorite spots we explored was Santurce, an arts district in San Juan PR, where the neighborhood was filled with murals and installations by local artists. The most scenic spot was St. John’s – I don’t think I’ve ever seen more beautiful waters anywhere.

Before my trip, I also purchased a new camera for myself just for personal use – the Fujifilm XT20, and a 35mm 1.4 lens to go with it. This camera is mirrorless, compact and lightweight – perfect for on-the-go shooting.

Now I’m well rested and recharged and ready to take on wedding season!

I aim to capture moments and expressions that tell the story of a day, and are authentic to the people involved. If you can look at a collection of images I’ve taken of a total stranger and get a feeling for who they are and what they felt, then I’ve done my job!
